WeHo News | Support for fur ban depends on POV
The fur industry put forward a proposal through the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proposed that would replace an outright ban with a set of regulations known as “Origin Assured” (OA).
Already available to retailers, Keith Kaplan, Executive Director of the Fur Information Council of America (FICA), suggested through the Chamber that the city make OA mandatory.
According to their web site, only fur from approved species, sourced from approved countries and sold through participating auction house may carry OA label.
The program uses independent monitoring agency Cotecna, which visits farms and auction houses to uphold standards.
“The industry developed the program because designers and consumers said they wanted more transparency, so we put together a system that offers transparency,” according to Mr. Kaplan.
