November 2009, West Hollywood, CA

This year, the FICA office received a record of over 60 entries from 20 different fashion design schools across the United States for the 2010 REMIX Student Design Competition. Though the competition was tough, a panel of manufacturers and designers selected three US finalists for the REMIX 2010 Competition, the International Fur Trade Federation’s highly regarded annual design competition. Christine Lee from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and William Alexander Simon and Luis Rodriguez, both of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, were chosen from the dozens of aspiring designers who sent in their sketches in hopes of seeing their designs come to life. The concepts that were chosen exhibited creativity, saleability and wearability, and the students’ garments will now be produced by participating manufacturers, with the fur for their coats being donated by auction houses worldwide. Christine Lee’s design is an A-line black mink coat with a detachable asymmetric collar in fox fur that will be manufactured by Pologeorgis Furs with the mink and fox provided by NAFA. William Alexander Simon’s garment is a coat constructed out of broadtail strips mounted on silk georgette. This garment will be produced by York Furriers with the broadtail provided by SAGA Furs. Luis Rodriguez designed an asymmetrical draped, curved blue iris mink coat with invisible zippers, which will be assembled by Funtastic Furs with mink supplied by American Legend. The US finalists’ garments will be showcased at the IFTF REMIX 2010 Competition and Runway Presentation to be held in March 2010 at MiFur, the annual Milan Fur Fashion Fair. Judging this international competition is a panel which includes top designers, fashion editors, and stylists from around the globe. With students from 34 other countries competing, the US students will hope to be one of the final 8 competitors chosen to fly to Italy to see their design celebrated at a special gala event and fashion show and compete for cash prizes.
Now in its seventh year, over 300 students have taken part in the ReMix Student Design Competition since its inception in 2003.
