New York Fur Fashion Week 2008

FICA presented their “Emerging Fur Designer of the Year” awards to Chris Benz (full garment) and Doo.Ri (accessories) at a lunch on Monday, May 12 attended by top designers, fur manufacturers, fashion press and industry representatives. Nominees for this award included Angel Chang, Rubin Singer, The Blondes, Catherine Malandrino, Kai Kuhne, Carlos Miele, Pamella Roland, Sydney Holloway, Carolina Amato and Devi Kroell. Also introduced at this lunch were Paulina Bui, Sara Shahbazi and Aisha Moten, US finalists for the ReMix International Student Design Competition.
Kicking off a week of designer presentations and events for Fur Fashion Week 2008, the message of the lunch was clear according to Keith Kaplan, executive director of FICA. “While established designers continue their love affair with fur, each season brings new designers who are just beginning to explore the creative possibilities of fur. Their new perspective on fur is redefining fur fashion, bringing vitality and excitement to our industry”.
Other events during the week included presentations by Isaac Mizrahi for Goodman couture, Cassin, Bill Blass for Global Furs, Kati Stern/Venexiana, Peter Som for Funtastic Furs, Orlando New York, Helen Yarmak, Alexandros Furs, Angel Sanchez for Funtastic Furs, Byte, Carmen Marc Valvo for Funtastic Furs, Chado Ralph Rucci for Pologeorgis Furs, Michael Kors for Pologeorgis Furs, Zac Posen for Pologeorgis Furs and Zandra Rhodes for Pologeorgis Furs. A special presentation titled “Art and Commerce” was presented by SAGA Furs at Parson’s School of Design.
