Dramatic new silhouettes. Bold textural mixes. The innovative use of trims. Designers continue to embrace the creative possibilities of fur in the Fall/Winter 2008-2009 collections. Artfully balancing the inspirations of the past with a modern, young sensibility, today’s fur fashions offer unprecedented versatility of design and indisputable luxury. Ready-to-wear fur adds a dramatic tone to the trends of the season. A creative aesthetic is at play on the runways as tradition is lightened up with dashes of color and artistic treatments. The mood is self-expression, and furs follow suit showing up in unexpected shades and water-colored prints. From Royal Chie’s scarlet finnraccoon and weasel silk coat to Bill Blass’ emerald fox vest, rich color palettes brighten up the most drab winter days. Ombre is the color technique and trend of the season and it is perfected throughout the designer collections. Peter Som’s plum ombre mink mantle and Chris Benz’s turquoise white finnraccoon ombre coat are two such examples of this fur shading technique. Great American sportswear returns to the fashion arena in tailored dressing and chic menswear. These looks, accentuated with fur, reveal a new modern elegance for the working woman. From a wool tweed jacket lined with silver fox cuffs by Orlando New York to Angel Sanchez’s mink patchworked olive green skirt, a touch of fur can add that sumptuous edge to everyday tailored looks. But there are still the classic fur looks, such as Petrou’s taupe sheared reversible sueded mink coat and Zandra Rhodes’ sable belted coat that will forever accentuate the femininity of fur. Fur can be the perfect addition to the modern career woman’s wardrobe, exemplified by Badgley Mischka’s black beaver and sheared mink sweater. The urban landscape becomes a source of inspiration this season, and grey tones emerge as one of this season’s color stories. Furs work the trend in hues from pale grey to charcoal to steel. Blue iris mink, a favorite across many designer collections this season, makes a bold statement in pieces such as Jason Wu’s blue iris sheared mink coat for Jonevon and Catherine Malandrino’s blue iris mink sheared coat with pleated sleeves. These modern shades add subtle neutrality to the aura of each collection, as seen in a sapphire mink jacket with organza overlay by Doo.Ri and a smoke broadtail coat by Dennis Basso. Designers take fur design to a new and unexplored direction by incorporating “savage” furs in their collections. Carolina Herrera’s equestrian-styled collection juxtaposes refined styles with an edgy touch, showcasing an amber fox vest. From Helen Yarmak’s fox hooded cape to an Elvira long-haired goat coat by Cassin, untamed volume makes a statement. Rich textural mixes in fur design take on modern styles that often integrate fur with other precious fabrications, as well as molding two or three furs together. This season’s stand-out piece is Isaac Mizrahi’s Rag fur coat which incorporates over ten different types of fur in one single garment. J. Mendel’s chestnut goat, black long-haired mink and brown Mongolian lamb coat further demonstrated this kind of artistry. Fur gives a three-dimensional look and feel to a garment because of its texture, which is unmistakable in Carmen Marc Valvo’s ivory goat trimmed fox coat and Chado Ralph Rucci’s mahogany broadtail trench with alligator waist. Combining the rarest furs and the richest details, fur designers across the spectrum continue to create fashion that complements the most sophisticated woman. This year designers also looked to the past for inspiration. The Blonde’s shadow fox coat and Venexiana’s caramel mink coat evoke imagery reminiscent of the golden era of the Silver Screen. Michael Kors presented a runway collection that echoes the iconic look of the classic Hitchcock heroines, with pieces like the Gardenia shantung balmacaan coat with red fox color. From the navy cashmere coat with block fox trim and fox beret designed by Miguel Cruz of Issa to the green velvet coat with fox trim by Adrienne Landau, these retro-inspired collections convey chic sophistication and restrained glamour. The fur trends this fall showcase designs with a greater breadth then ever before. With more innovative and up and coming designers adding fur to their collections, fur continues to be the fabric of choice this season.
